Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT for research?
For quick, cited, up-to-date research, Perplexity is usually better — every answer links its sources. For deep reasoning, drafting, and general work, ChatGPT is more capable. Many researchers use Perplexity to find and cite, ChatGPT to synthesize.
Perplexity is built as an answer engine: it searches the live web and returns concise, cited answers with source links, and lets you pick the underlying model (GPT-5.x, Claude, or Gemini) on one subscription. Its free tier even includes a few Deep Research queries per day.
ChatGPT is a more general assistant. With Deep Research and browsing it can also cite sources, and it is stronger for long reasoning, drafting, and multi-step tasks — but its default answers are less consistently sourced than Perplexity's.
For fact-finding where citations matter, start with Perplexity. For turning findings into a document, analysis, or code, ChatGPT is the better second step.
